An R3 grade offshore mooring chain is a robust chain designed for mooring applications in marine environments, particularly suited for continental shelf operations such as offshore oil platforms and floating production units. It is a medium-strength, high-toughness chain used in offshore anchoring system.

This grade is part of a hierarchy defined by classification societies, which includes:

R3: Standard offshore use, moderate water depths

R3S/R4/R4S/R5: For deeper waters and harsher conditions

R3 grade offshore mooring chains are available in various diameters, typically ranging from 34mm to 162mm. The proof and breaking loads vary accordingly. For example:

·76mm diameter:

Proof Load: 3417kN

Proof Load: 4885kN

Each batch is typically tested for mechanical properties(yield, tensile strength), charpy impact toughness, proof and break load tests and dimensional tolerances.

R3 grade offshore mooring chain is available in two types. Stud link chain is common in permanent mooring due to added stability and strength, while studless chain is lighter, better suited for specific depths or reduced weight needs.
